No sobrepasar tiempo permitido.

Scientific Thinking And The Scientific Method Philosophy Essay

Logical Thinking And The Scientific Method Philosophy Essay The logical technique is a way that permits us to legitimize logical information and choose whether the data we are given is solid or not. All in all, what is solid information? In Scientific Thinking and the Scientific Method, Steven D. Schaferman makes reference to Reliable Knowledge will be information that has a high likelihood of being genuine on the grounds that its veracity has been defended by a solid technique. For instance, individuals have their own insight and convictions; in any case, not all people groups information and convictions are dependably obvious. In this manner, logical reasoning guides individuals to decide whether their insight is solid and advocated. To illustrate, researchers practice logical speculation so as to find the globe and nature; by and by, logical reasoning isn't just for researchers. Indeed, when one practices the strategies for logical reasoning, one is rehearsing basic reasoning. Schaferman says Critical reasoning is thinking accurately for o neself that effectively prompts the most solid responses to questions and answers for issues. Clearly, information isn't constrained to the investigation of nature, yet to all parts of life and society. Truly, the logical technique end up being the best and solid strategy for deduction in mankind's history. Thus, logical reasoning and basic reasoning are being educated at schools. To be sure, in the event that you ace their abilities, you will reach to dependable resolutions and think effectively Schafersman says. The logical technique is made out of three things: observation, realism, and suspicion. These segments are viewed as central to logical and basic reasoning. Experimentation is the utilization of exact proof which is proof that is powerless to ones faculties, for example, seeing, hearing, contacting, tasting, and smelling. The significance of observational proof is that it is testable by others. Thusly, your cases are tried by others and yourself. Nonetheless, there is a great deal of proof that are not considered as observational proof because of their lack of quality. Tribute proof, dramatic proof, and unearthly proof, proof showed by heavenly entitles, are instances of questionable proof. Despite what might be expected, tyrant proof is solid just if the authority is dependable. In this way, one must check if the authority is dependable; besides, experimental proof, basic reasoning, and sensible thinking ought to be approved before considering the power solid. Be that as it may, Schafersman says you should be your own position and depend on your forces of basic reasoning. Yet, we cannot get appropriate instruction without relying upon l egitimate proof. To illustrate, we gained from our folks to tune in and obey specialists; people groups that depended on specialists choices had a higher level of endurance and it is the most precise and snappiest in passing data. Naturalism, then again, is experimental proof. Schafersman cites the universe exists as science says it does.' Indeed, there is a solid bond among science and common proof. To summarize, observational proof is vital in light of the fact that in addition to the fact that it makes individuals see what you guarantee so as to be dependable, yet additionally it makes you practice the logical technique. Logic, then again, is another strategy for rehearsing the logical technique. Logic is characterized as the act of coherent thinking. Truth be told, rationale permits the individual to reason effectively. For example, basic masterminds and researchers utilize consistent thinking. Be that as it may, coherent thinking isn't effectively learned. To expand, researchers and basic masterminds went through years learning and rehearsing coherent thinking since it expects you to battle with your will. The truth of the matter is intelligent thinking powers the individual to deny his emotions which is excruciating. Shockingly, individuals interface consistent prevailing upon impractical, enthusiastic, and cheerful reasoning. Subsequently, individuals must figure out how to think intelligently and the most ideal approach to it is by contemplating instructive courses that drives you to utilize rationale. Actually Practice makes great. To wrap things up, incredulity is the last key of rehearsing the logical strategy. The scrutinizing of your cases and ends in basic Schafersman says. He additionally expounds that great researchers their contentions, and proof. One must scrutinize the dependability of information. For example, one can test his convictions against target reality by forecast the result. On the off chance that your suspicions are right, your convictions are dependable information. The truth of the matter is that numerous individuals guarantee that doubters are shut disapproved, yet they are most certainly not. Cynics decay to change their convictions with the exception of if there is dependable proof to what individuals guarantee. Nonetheless, if there are dependable proof to claims against their convictions, they change their supposition. Certainly, one must choose what to accept and what not to accept. Induction, logic, and wariness are the keys of utilizing the logical strategy; in any case, perceptions, information, and speculations are significant, however are not parts of the logical technique. Without a doubt, rehearsing the logical strategy is indispensable. Initial, one ought to pose an inquiry where it can have an answer. At that point, one should accumulate data so as to respond to his inquiry. A short time later, he proposes arrangements which is called speculation. Subsequently, he looks at these speculations. On the off chance that it is right, at that point his data is solid. In the event that it comes up short, he should alter or change his theory. At long last, one must develop backing to his hypothesis. For sure, the logical technique causes us in recognizing solid information not at all like some other strategy.

Diageo existed in current guise for little more than decade. - Free Essay Example

1. INTRODUCTION The organisation I have chosen to study is DIAGEO (1). The company itself is relatively young and although its parent companies have existed since 1749, Diageo has existed in its current guise for little more than a decade. With heritage and pedigree in the food and beverage industry spanning some 250 years, the merger of United Distillers Vinters with Guinness and also Grand Metropolitan International Distillers Vintners in 1997, saw the formation of this global conglomerate recognised today as Diageo. Ever evolving, Diageo sold all food assets in 2002; a strategic move enabling them to focus on its global collection of premium drinks. Year on year, Diageo continues to deliver double digit market growth; performance not many businesses can claim in recent years due to the global economic downturn. 2. RATIONALE My rationale for choosing Diageo is that I recognised it as a large scale multi national manufacturing business, which I felt would suit this topic. Having grown up in Brora, a small village in the Scottish Highlands where a malt whisky named Clyneleish is produced, I feel as though I have a connection to Diageo, as they own the Clyneleish distillery and members of my family work there at the distillery. As Diageo are a global conglomerate, I felt that they could also provide me with sufficient information in which to investigate their business processes further. An additional benefit is that I have a family member with 22 years of experience working within a Diageo owned distillery; I felt that this may provide me with an additional opportunity to discuss the Diageo management structures, business processes, organisational objectives, environmental issues and achievements further. 3. AIMS OBJECTIVES Focussed on its staff, consumers and customers, Diageos aim is to become one of the worlds most trusted and respected companies and has a business strategy (2) of delivering sustainable organic growth through the stewardship of an outstanding range of premium drinks. The Diageo ethos is to do the right thing every day, everywhere, with a view to increasing market share, adding value, whilst meeting financial objectives. 4. ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE As a publicly owned global beverage manufacturer, the Diageo brand is segregated into 4 geographic locations, with  £3 billion in revenue generated in over 180 markets. Each continental headquarter has one Director, who manages their business process and environment. Operational functions are executed by geographic regional management, each being responsible for meeting Diageo strategic objectives; responding to regional market analysis and opportunity. Within a global suprasystem, this internationalised (3), democratic and progressive organisation fully involves its staff in decision making due to the value placed on workforce knowledge and experience by management. Increasingly managed scientifically (4), Diageo operates 129 different facilities, 50+ of which are in Scotland. Global and European headquarters are based in London and more pertinently, within Scotland there are 4 main offices controlling operational assets, such as: 27 Malt distilleries 3 Grain distilleries 4 Malt-houses 7 Warehouses 4 Cooperages 3 Bottling halls 3 Packaging plants 5. ANALYSIS The illustration below demonstrates the Inwards systems approach adopted by Diageo in order to increase efficiency and reduce operating costs. This is demonstrated by use of a standardised supply chain, manufacturing and distribution procedure throughout their global network. I believe the careful management of the internal manufacturing, process standardisation, accompanied with the unique set of resources captured within Scotland has led to Diageo producing a strategic business resource and has led to them gaining a significant and competitive advantage over their business sector rivals. Diageo North America Diageo International Diageo Europe Diageo Asia Pacific Retail Operations Global Supply HRM Marketing Innovation Corporate Relations Legal Procurement Value Chain Diageo have a sophisticated value chain that links to Porters Model (5), ensuring value is added at each operational stage by forging relationships with businesses that have similar core values. Seeking mutual benefit and also to raise social standards, the Diageo Value Chain aims to create economic opportunity for other businesses involved within it and focuses on 3 key areas: Customers Diageo customers are the product distributors and retailers. Diageo creates business for customers by providing the product and by offering commercial skills and resources to enable responsible business growth, maximising customer returns. Suppliers Diageo works with approximately 20,000 suppliers. Promoting responsible relationships, Diageo examines commercial considerations and ethical issues such as labour relations, health and safety, environmental management and business integrity. Consumers Brand quality is the basis for the trust formed between the consumer and Diageo; this comes from consumer confidence in the product and is achieved through several means, such as product quality, environmental sustainability, continued staff development and the reinforcement of alcohol awareness in todays fragile society (6). PESTEL Analysis Every business organisation whether they are inwardly or outwardly focussed is subject to an inordinate amount of external pressure, on areas such as procurement, manufacturing, distribution, advertising and sales. Environmental pressure analysis is crucial to the Diageo success and the following table is a flavour of my initial interpretation of this: Political Positive Negative Positive contribution to and exertion of influence on the UK Taxation system. Global social investment programmes in countries where Diageo brands are sold. Extant global trade agreements. Excellent cultural and social awareness programmes in place. Governmental instability and change within countries where Diageo products are sold. Diageo threatens to move its global headquarters outside UK, due to taxation system. Economic Positive Negative Global value chain partnerships boosting economic growth. E.g. Recent local investment of  £86 million in Fife, Scotland creating 400 jobs at a bottling plant. Low interest rates and inflation in the UK. Global recession and economic downturn may have a negative impact on third parties with whom Diageo does business. Reduction in consumer spending levels on executive products due to recession. Potential reduction in market share due to increased sector competition. Social Positive Negative Global demographic varying brand demand. Excellent strategy for environmental and community project investment. Excellent media and alcohol awareness strategies, promoting responsibility. Possible workforce disruption due to organisation re-structuring and streamlining of plant operational processes. Reduction in general household expenditure due to global recession. Technological Positive Negative Strong re-investment strategy into production capabilities (RD). Global supply and distribution network improvement. Staff reduction due to increased operational efficiency and process management. Environmental Positive Negative Fully committed to environmental sustainment through investment in global environmental projects. Staff inclusivity, development and morale. Brand value and consumer confidence. Environmental regulation limitations, increasing production costs. Ecological restrictions. Legal Positive Negative Excellent commitment towards responsible alcohol consumption and consumer protection. Industry specific quality regulations. Extensive global regulatory requirements increase production costs and manufacturing time. 6. MEASURING SUCCESS To remain the global market leader, Diageo success can be partly attributed to its active corporate performance measurement. This can be evidenced by its re-investment strategy of committing 1% of operating profit into production capabilities, i.e. production improvement, global community and social investment projects (7). Diageo set 60 KPIs last year, measuring success by evaluation of key areas such as socio-economics, environmental sustainability and the media. As a member of several global associations, Diageo continually analyses its own value chain, competitive advantage and market share through production, sales, consumption and economic evaluation. Global media investment in advertising and promotions touches  £500 million. In Scotland alone, Diageo re-invests  £75 million into production capabilities and is responsible for the following: 20% of Scottish food beverage worldwide exports are Diageo branded Employment of 4500 staff within Scotland Sustainment of 12000 staff in other value chain companies  £400 million paid to Scottish suppliers raw materials, manufacturing production The following is an illustration of area sales year ending 30 Jun 10: Region Sales % Annual Consumption (Cases) Daily Consumption (Measures) North America 34 30 Million Whisky 12 Million white spirit (Vodka etc) 81 Million Spirits 19 Million Beer 4 Million Branded 3 Million Wine Europe 28 International 27 Asia Pacific 11 The illustration below appears to fit the Diageo mission statement of doing the right thing and positively influencing environments and societies around the world. Ultimately, measurement of success within the manufacturing/retail sector lies within operating profit; however examination of the bigger picture leads me to believe that the global consumer and the society in which they live measure the success of this company. The uniqueness of the Scottish Whisky industry, the staff and their invaluable experience lie at the heart of Diageo, hence its market strength and double digit year on year growth. 7. CONCLUSION As a global conglomerate, Diageo is a market leader not just in terms of vision and values; but with strategies across many different areas, such as brand heritage and quality, environmental awareness, global supply, social development and many more; the competitive advantage is plain to see. Regardless of the number of awards (8) Diageo wins the global consumer endorses my belief that they are the Worlds best beverage manufacturer.

The Mill On The Floss - 2372 Words

In George Eliot’s The Mill on the Floss, one of the long, resounding themes of the novel is the nature of love and how it changes people over time. While a loving nature is generally regarded as a noble if not redeemable trait in literary characters, especially in Victorian literature where the idea of marrying for love was gaining popularity, protagonist Maggie Tulliver subverted that idea. It was because of Maggie’s all consuming familial love for her brother Tom, platonic love for Philip, and romantic love for Stephen that directly caused her ultimate downfall and death. At the heart of the novel, Maggie’s relationship with her older brother Tom was without a doubt the most important in her life. The two were incredibly close as†¦show more content†¦To be fair, Tom was a child who had just found out his pets were killed, so it’s understandable that he would be angry and lash out. However, this was the first of many times throughout the novel that Maggie displease Tom in some way, be swiftly and harshly punished for it, and return to Tom wholeheartedly whenever it suited him to apologize. The next time that the two siblings fought was the infamous pastry debacle, in which Tom had stolen two pastries for them to share and let Maggie decide who would get the bigger one. Maggie insisted that he take the bigger pastry, but Tom countered by telling her it was alright for her to take it. He then seethed in anger as they ate together when she did indeed take the prefered pastry and he called her greedy. Tom’s motivations for doing this are never made entirely clear. Was it a trick question? Was he testing Maggie to see if she would still put him first even when he said not to? But that was the trick, that she thought she was being respectful and putting Tom first by taking his permission to accept the larger pastry for herself. Maggie could never seem to win with Tom because of his strange logic and sense of justice, and their strained relationship finally boiled over in childhood when she ran away to live with gypsies -anything to not have to deal with Tomâ€℠¢s disappointingly on-again, off-again

Kill Bill a Technical and Aesthetic Analysis of the Film

Quentin Tarantinos Kill Bill is a movie that is easy to love or hate. For viewers who watch the film simply for a night-at-the-movie-theatre type of experience, they would likely write it off as a total waste of time; they might say it was too cheesy with too much blood on top. Yet, viewers with some knowledge of film may perceive it as one of the most aesthetically captivating films that they have ever seen as a medium that masterfully blends violence and beauty. This brief paper will briefly discuss the aesthetic and technical aspect of both parts of the three hours long film with hopes of bringing a deeper sense of appreciation towards the film among readers who have already seen both of them; although, many of the scenes will not be†¦show more content†¦As mentioned in the bonus feature of the film, Tarantino wanted each chapter within the film to have a different feeling as it explores different genres, such as the western, melodrama, horror, and other types that were m entioned above. The usage of samurai swords, oriental settings and attires, variety types of kung-fu moves, and several doses of anime throughout the film is Tarantinos tip of the hat towards the cinematography of the Asian culture. However, the use of guns, western drawls, cowboy attires, and the setting in a small rural Texas town during the massacre scene captures the essence of a western film. Living The Good Life - Original Writing - 1402 Words

I had very little to complain about with living the good life. I had very little to complain about with getting whatever I wanted. I had very little to complain about having the guy of my dreams wanting to marry me. Unfortunately, I had several things to complain about! I didn’t know how to put the right words together and not sound like some spoiled brat or some overly pampered princess. Well, I was about to be a princess and it was the pampering where most of my complaints came from. I was not some little girl who needed help to get dressed every morning and told how my day was planned out to the second. Every morning I woke to the sound of footsteps, then someone pulling back the drapes covering the windows, the smell of†¦show more content†¦Next came was a large cloth for my lap, a small bed table with legs, and a covered tray that normally had something light for me to eat and tea or hot chocolate to drink. Once I was finished, the doctor and his staff would arri ve for my morning checkup. Once he gave his approval, I was allowed to get dressed, and that was another nightmare. There were normally six to ten maids holding up different expensive outfits depending on what the doctors would allow for the day. It was either fresh pajamas, robes and slippers or clothes that easily make any girl swoon for me to choose from and it would happen to be the first time they had done this that I would rebel and yell for them to just put one of them on my bed and get out. My mother was standing in the doorway when head maid Erna said smugly that I was not behaving like a proper princess, it was her attempt to give me what I want in her own way. I was very thankful that my mother didn’t pick up her real meaning, but she did tell me to get use to this, because this way how people like Dale and his parents lived. Gender Roles And Opportunities For The Persian Women

â€Å"Elham was eight years old when she first wrapped herself in a chador; the all-encompassing black cloth Iranian women wear to disguise their figures. She spent her entire adolescence under its heavy drape†. This was until she laid foot in Australia and freed herself from the gender roles and expectations of Iran, unveiling herself both theoretically and in practice. Similar to beauty ideals, my investigation also aims to identify whether gender roles and opportunities for power for Persian women have changed as a result of migration to Australia. Equality and opportunities for power has always been a blurred line in both developed and less advanced countries. Female respondents in my questionnaire were of various age groups and all reside in Australia. The questionnaire provided responses that correspond with the power and gender equality aspect of my research. Respondents were asked if they thought, â€Å"Do Persian women who reside in Iran have equal opportunities for power and gender equality than they do in Australia?† A total of 62 (76.5%) respondents showed that they do not, whilst 19 (23.4%) believed so. Graph 2 Graph 2 represents the questionnaire results completed by a total of 81 responses, which consisted of both qualitative and quantitative data. Majority of the responders, regardless of their cultural background responded ‘yes’, sitting in at a total of 76.5% meanwhile the minority answering ‘no’ filling up the remaining at 23.4%. Operational Activities of the Fun City-Free-Samples-Myassignment

Question: Discuss about the Operational Activities of the Fun City Gaming Inc. Answer: Introduction This paper has been constructed in order to create a clear idea about the operational activities of the Fun City Gaming Inc. The paper will be influential for the construction of the research objective and identifying the research problem. The paper would even provide a review of literature where information that has been given other researchers has been explained. Background of the Paper The paper mainly concentrates on Fun City Inc which presently functions as a multilevel dockside riverboat casino and has a land based pavilion along with a hotel and three restaurants on the Arlen River. The casino has over 1500 slot machines and has over 70 table games. The Fun City Gaming Inc has been the flagship company for the Fun City franchise. This casino has four significant competitors and every one of them have been functioning within a specified radius. The reason for the construction of the paper has been due to the fact that Fun City Gaming Inc has been operating along their competitors and there would be a rise in their competition due to the introduction of a new casino, which would start functioning within a year. This new casino would be very near to Fun City Inc and would give a hard fight to Fun City Gaming Inc. therefore, Fun city gaming Inc are in the idea of redeveloping and restructuring their business with the help of the construction of a new area that woul d have a larger gaming vessel, pavilion and addition of a new restaurant and parking garage. In order to finance this project the company is need of additional capital and therefore the management have decided to raise their business by attracting new customer and even from the current customers. Therefore, this paper will provide effective help in identifying the research objectives and the problems and constructing a path for the completion of the paper. Research Problems The research problem comprises of the proposed research of the paper. With respect to the case study the problem of the research has been recognising the ideas, prospects and strategies that would be implemented by the company so that the company will be able to generate money for the redevelopment of the casino and the other research problem has been to construct effective plans that would be influential to attract new customers and to increase their competitive edge and market share with the help of improved services and strategies with respect to their competitors (Barsky and Maier 2015). Research Objectives The research aims and objectives consists of the goals that the researcher needs to accomplish in order to complete the research in an effective manner and assist the organization in understanding the key areas and the strategies in order to raise their income for the redevelopment of their casino and maintain competitive edge in the market. The research objectives have been given below: To identify the exact positioning of the new casino Whether to name the casino the same as Fun City Gaming Inc or rebrand it. What should be the name of the new casino if the casino is rebranded Identify the most appropriate process in order to raise the money for redevelopment Development of strategies that would be influential for the maintaining the competitive edge Literature Review The review of literature has been constructed in order to find out the information and the recommendation put forward by the previous researchers with respect to redevelopment of the casino and the discovering the strategies that would be beneficial for Fun City Gaming Inc. Brida, Cortes-Jimenez and Pulina (2016) has explained that expertise casino hotels look to be focused in to areas that are of tourist attraction and with an area where the availability of local people is there. The casino hotels are therefore mainly available near seas, banks of the river etc. It has been observed that casinos generally have hotel rooms and restaurants so that the customers can even stay in the hotel and have a pleasure time in the region. Han et al. (2017) has described that a tourist place has various rival casinos as it is seen that these places are filled with tourists and travellers prefer casino as leisure for them. The rivalry among the casinos has been mainly due to in terms of design and the retention and attraction of the new and existing customers. Zopiatis, Constanti and Theocharous (2014) has described that the introduction of the entertainment areas in the casinos has introduced an extra challenge and therefore is in the requirement of expert advice and consultant. Casinos have been a place of leisure and money for people as leisure and even as a gamble and therefore there are various customers who come to challenge their luck. However, Io (2016) has explained that there are many customers who do not prefer hotels that have casinos and therefore it has been the strategy of the casinos to introduce various new facilities that would attract these customers as well. Tongchaiprasit and Ariyabuddhiphongs, (2016) has revealed that the determinants with respect to the tolerance of price in the casinos has exhibited that there exists a positive relationship among the price toleration and the satisfaction and the switching costs are even influenced positively to the price tolerance. The outcome of the paper has pointed out that the programs introduced by the casinos like the casino loyalty program for the members have given out increased switching costs and tolerance of prices with respect to the people who are non-members. Li, Wong and Kim (2017) has even explained that increasing the number of slot machines attract more customers as they get sufficient space for gambling. Pan (2015) has opined that customers prefer casinos that have various other amenities that would satisfy the desires of the consumers. Ruizalba et al. (2014) has even explained that casinos should even introduce new gambling games that would attract customers. Therefore, it has been observed that most of the casinos are seen hotels where the tourists come for a visit. The development of these facilities would be influential for the development of an improved operational activity that would retain the existing customers as well as attract the new customers as well. Io (2016) has even stated that analysing the operational strategy of the rival casinos would be influential for the developing strategies that improve their competitive advantage. This section of the paper has been constructed in order to develop the research approach and the method that would be influential for the completion of the study. This section would even discuss the sample size, the research tools, the type of research and the proposed process of analysis so that the paper could be completed in an effective manner. Research approach Research Approach has been one of significant step in undertaking the paper and reaching the desired and the logical end result of the paper. In this respect, Mackey and Gass (2015) has explained that the research approach is helpful to the researcher in recognising every step for undertaking the activities that have been desired for the completion of the research. There are two kinds of research approaches that consist of the deductive approach and the inductive approach. As explained by Taylor, Bogdan and DeVault (2015) inductive approach helps the researcher in constructing a new framework and theories that are influential for revealing the end result of the paper. On the other hand Glesne (2015) are in the idea that deductive approach concentrates on evaluating the tools and the models that are available in relation to the research topic that looks to gather the data. With respect to the current research paper that looks to identify the ways that would be influential for identifying the ways to improve the financial stability of casinos and improving the competitive edge of Fun City Gaming Inc, deductive approach would be used as this paper would be completed by taking help of the responses given out by the customers who are from the radius of the concerned company. Sample Size and Selection This paper would be completed by taking help of around 100 gamblers that would be influential for the completion of the paper. The chosen sample size would be helpful for the completion of the paper in an effective manner with respect to the constraint of time (Brinkmann 2014). The responses of the gamblers with the help of the telephonic survey would be influential for the completion of the paper as the responses that would be received would be effective enough for the rectification of the problem and the completion of the paper. The responses will be undertaken with the help of the questionnaire that has been constructed with respect research problem and objectives. The selection of the sample has been possible by choosing a radius of 100 miles from the location of Fun City. The sample size would be consist of the 50 respondents within the Arlen Valley and the rest of 50 from the area where the completion of the company is existent. The screening of the respondents has been based on a year based use of the casino. Type of Research It is known that there are two types of research that are available to the researcher namely the Qualitative and Quantitative process. However, with respect to this paper, it has been observed that as the responses of the gamblers and the tourists would be taken into consideration with the help of telephonic survey, the best kind of research for this paper has been the quantitative one as quantitative process is undertaken with the help of responses from various resources (Ruizalba et al. 2014). Research Tools The research tools that would be used for the completion of the paper would include the research design which with respect to this paper would a descriptive research design, the philosophy of the research with regards to this paper would be positivism philosophy as it would be influential for the completion of the paper explicitly. The collection of the responses of the participants would be completed with the help of the close ended questionnaires that comprises of the questions related to the topic and does not hurt the sentiments of the respondents. Proposed analysis method According to the current paper and the topic under consideration, the proposed method would include positivism philosophy. The philosophy acts as the guideline that the researcher follows in order to complete the paper in a precise manner. The research approach would be a deductive one as it would be comply with the data that has been collected. The paper would have a descriptive research design so that the data collected can be completed in a precise manner and therefore the completion of the paper would be done with the proposed method so that effective results can be obtained. The Dark Genius Of The Short Story Essays - Edgar Allan Poe

The Dark Genius of the Short Story Many authors have made great contributions to the world of literature. Mark Twain introduced Americans to life on the Mississippi. Jack London told of the courage of many on the Alaskan Frontier. Another author that made an influence on literature is Edgar Allan Poe. Poe is known as the father of the American short story. To understand the literary contributions of Edgar Allan Poe, one must look at his early life, his literary life, and a summary of two of his famous works. Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 19, 1809 (Stern xi). He was born to a southern family that was in a traveling company of actors (Marks 2). His father, David Poe, was from a Baltimore family. He was an actor by profession but his family would say he made a career out of drinking, not acting. Soon after Edgar Allan Poe was born, he left his family. Poe's mother, Elizabeth Arnold Poe, was a widow at the age of eighteen (Porges 32). Two years after his birth, she died of tuberculosis (Stern xi). When his mother died, Poe was adopted by John Allan (Stern xi) at the urging of Mr. Allan's wife. In 1815, John Allan moved his family to England. While there, Poe was sent to private schools which he described as dark, ancient, labyrinths (Stern, Edgar Allen Poe Visitor for the Night of Time 42). In the spring of 1826, Poe entered the University of Virginia. There he studied Spanish, French, Italian, and Latin. He had an excellent scholastic record, but he got into difficulties almost at once. Mr. Allan did not provide him with the money to pay for his fees and other necessities. Poe was confused and homesick. He learned to play cards and started drinking. Soon he was in debt over two thousand dollars. Poe discovered that he could not Clint Fiore 2 depend upon Allan for financial support. His foster father refused to pay his debts, and Poe had to withdraw from the University (Haines 62). In May of 1827, Poe enlisted in the army as a common soldier. He did this under the name of Edgar A. Perry (Porges 43). He was stationed on Sullivan's Island in Charleston Harbor for over a year. Poe adapted very well to military discipline and quickly rose to the rank of regimental sergeant major. After a while, he got tired of the same daily routine involved in military life. Poe wrote regularly to Mr. Allan. He met with Mr. Allan after the death of Mrs. Allan in February of 1829. With Allan's support, he received his discharge and enlisted in West Point on July 1, l830 (Stern xii). While at West Point, Mr. Allan, who had remarried, continued in not providing Poe with enough money. Poe decided to have himself kicked out of school. Cutting classes and disregarding orders were his solutions (Porges 44). He was court-martialed for neglect of duties in January, 1831, and left West Point the following month (Stern xii). Poe was great in three different fields , and in each one he made a reputation that would give any man a high place in literary history. Poe wrote great short stories, famous not only in his own country, but all over the world (Stern, Edgar Allen Poe Visitor from the Night of Time 12). Hawthorne, Irving, Balzac, Bierce, Crane, Hemingway and other writers have given us memorable short stories; but none has produced so great a number of famous and unforgettable examples, so many tales that continue, Clint Fiore 3 despite changing standards to be read and reprinted again and again throughout the world (Porges 15). Poe was the father of the modern short story, and the modern detective story (Porges 19). In 1831, Poe succeeded in publishing a new edition of his poems entitled, Poems. Poe was now in great difficulty. He went to New York, but could find no job there. Eventually he took refuge with his aunt, Mrs. Clemm, in Baltimore. There he decided to seek employment and make his living by writing. Failing to get attention with his poems, he decided to start writing short stories. Poe competed in a contest for the best

Links Between Criminality and Psysical Body Type Term Paper

Links Between Criminality and Psysical Body Type - Term Paper Example Links between criminality and physical body type Criminality was explained purely in moral and physical terms a couple of centuries before. However, in during the latter part of nineteenth century, criminologists, sociologists and psychologists started to develop more comprehensive theories with respect to criminality. The connection of physiology or physical body type with criminality was first proposed by Italian anthropologist Cesare Lomboso in 1876. â€Å"Lombroso started a tradition of physiological theories of criminality. These have in common a focus on the person’s physical form as a marker of criminality†(Sammons, n.d., p.1). Lomboso argued that criminals can be identified or distinguished from a mass population if we analyze the body shapes of people. In his opinion, strong jaws and heavy brows are signs of aggressiveness. Even though Cesare Lomboso’s theories were taken as a joke by many people initially, later his theories started to catch the attenti on of the people. According to modern researches, there are certain people with a particular body type who show more aggressive behaviors than others. â€Å"Lomboso suggested that different types of criminal had different features, so murderers had bloodshot eyes and curly hair, whilst sex offenders had thick lips and protruding ears† (Sammons, n.d., p.1). ... Lomboso believed that people with thick lip may show more sexual desire than other people because of their genetic peculiarities. Sheldon (1949) distinguished between three basic types of bodily build: ectomorph (thin), endomorph (fat) and mesomorph (muscular). Sheldon believed that bodily build was linked to personality and temperament so ectomorphs were solitary and restrained, endomorphs relaxed and hedonistic and mesomorphs energetic and adventurous (Sammons, n.d., p.1). Sheldon described the characteristics of different body types as follows: â€Å"Endomorphs- rounder, relaxed comfortable, extroverted; Mesomorphs- muscular, active, assertive, lust for power; Ectomorphs- lean, thin, introverted, overly sensitive, love privacy† (Regoli & Hewitt, 2008, p.93). Endomorphs are people with normal body structure. They don’t have any complaints about their body shape or appearance. Therefore they will behave normally in the society. These people would like to engage in more socializing activities because of their lack of concerns about their appearances. On the other hand, ectomorphs are not much satisfied with their physical appearances. They will always like to stay away from the eyes of the society because of their inferiority feeling in appearances. On the other hand, mesomorphs have strong body and they are proud of their body shape and strength. Over confidence about body shapes and physical strength may force mesomorphs to increase their dominating mentality towards others. They consider themselves as privileged people and all others as second class citizens. People with muscular body will definitely have more confidence in their physical abilities than other people. Genetically, all people like to dominate others. However, intelligence
