Critical Analysis of A Mother in Dubliners Essay In the short story, A Mother, James Joyce highlights four different aspects: Theme, Style, Language used, and the Characteristics of the Characters. There are five different themes highlighted in the story. The first one is Paralysis, which is the central theme for all the stories in Dubliners. In this story, paralysis is shown with the storys main character, Mrs. Kearney, who is constantly relying and depending on her daughter, providing her with a very good education and making her follow a career in music. Paralysis could also be seen with Kathleen Kearney, who was forced by her mother to follow a musical career, and the way some people eventually say that she has no future in music whatsoever. The second theme, marriage, deals with the way it is portrayed in a negative way. Mrs. Kearney got married out of spite, and there isnt much romance in the relationship between her and her husband, although this doesnt suggest that she has completely given up her romantic ideas. We also see the portrayal of husbands and wives, or family life in general, in a negative way. See more: how to write a good critical analysis essay The third theme is class distinction. This is to do with how Mrs. Kearney keeps on bragging to her friends that her husband is taking her and her daughter to Skerries and they spend their money on Kathleens education and music lessons, to help prepare her for the concerts. Another aspect that highlights this theme s Ms. Kearnys use of language, which is that of an upper class, and this shows that she received an education that was as good as her daughters. The fourth theme is culture and religion. Certain aspects of culture are highlighted when we are told about the grand concerts, which are part of the Irish revival. Also, we see the way the Irish language is kept alive, like the way Mrs. Kearney and her friends say good-bye in Irish. As for religion, we find out that Mr. Kearney was very religious and he often went to church by himself. The final theme is materialism. This is to do with the way Mrs. Kearney is opportunistic, and how she is persistent with her daughter receiving money for all her performances. Joyce uses a satirical writing style in this story. This means that he is making fun of the characters indirectly/subtly. For example, the narrator refers to the concerts as grand, when in reality they are a failure, and the way Mr. Holohans friends call him Happy Holohan. Also, the way he refers to the artists in the concert as artistes. Another aspect of Joyces style is impressionism. This is to do with how the narrator just tells us about the story (gives us a feedback) without revealing anything to us. For example, the narrator tells us the story through the way he sees it. He does not state his opinion, but instead he leaves us with what information we received from him to come up with our own conclusions of the characters. Naturalism is another aspect of Joyces style. He uses real places and real names in the story to give the reader a sense of place. The language Joyce assigned to the narrator is simple and flamboyant. For example, People said she was very clever, a very nice girl and a believer in the language movement (p. 155). There are two forms of language spoken by the narrator: Speaking about the characters and providing information (Miss Devlin had become Mrs. Kearney out of spite She was educated in high-class convent ), and speaking on behalf of the characters (People said she was a very nice girl ). When reading the story, we reach a few conclusions about the characters. Mrs. Kearney is revealed as a snob, conceited woman living in middle-class Dublin, and received a high-class education. We see that she has a harsh and cold attitude (Her ivory manners were admired She sat among the chilly circle of her accomplishments). Mr. Kearny is a pious and sober man, he does not have a romantic relationship with his wife (not enough love), but he is always there to help and support his wife. Mr. Fitzpatrick represents the negative side of the male characters. Because of him, the concert ended in failure. In this story, Joyce has highlighted many aspects, ranging from themes to style, and he elaborated on them with detail, which helps the reader understand the way he portrays real life in Dublin.

Canada's Diverse History This essay analyzes the diversity of Canada's history, geography, climate, economy, cultures and government. Did you know it is the largest country in the world now that U.S.S.R broke up. Specifically, Canada is 9,922,330 square km. Did you know that Canada used to be named "Kanata"? Yes, Kanata is an Indian word meaning village. It was not until July 1,1867 that Kanata was renamed Canada. Canada was originally discovered by Jacques Cartier an explorer from France who sailed down the St.Lawrence in 1534. Cartier we believe was the first to set foot on Canadian soil. He marked his presence with a flag claiming it his land. Over the years, Canada has developed into the home of the largest free-standing structure in the world. Canada,(a great tourist attraction)is also home of the largest water fall in the world. Our farmland unlike a lot of others has a variety of climate. The warmer summer climate ranges from +10 - +30 and the cooler climate ranges from anywhere to -10 - -30. Despite the changes in temperature, Canada's precipitation is very light. Our home is enclosed by the United States of south, the Pacific ocean and Alaska on the west side, the Atlantic ocean on the east side and the Arctic up north. One of the dominant reasons Canada is so well populated is due to the fact of our financial status. At this present time, the economy is not doing too well, but who's is? Canada is highly industrialised by manufacturing Automobiles, food, liquor and tobacco. We as a Unified country accept other cultures and religions. Canada has about every nationality possible and together they form a great home. Despite the many cultures, Canada's main languages are english and french. Canada is a democracy. This means the government is elected by all t ople.

The Coca †Cola Product
Known to manufacture and distribute non-alcoholic and carbonated beverages, Coca-Cola Bottling Company, which is now known as Coca-Cola Bottling Company Consolidated in Charlotte North Carolina, started at Atlanta in 1886. CCBCC also manufactures bottled water, teas, sports drink, etc. The other branches of this company are dispersed at South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee and other parts of North America. Coke is a trademark product of this company and has been distributed all throughout the world. It is very trivial where and how this drink has started. According to some historical accounts of CCBCC, the carbonated drink was first introduced as a fountain drink and was not commercially produced as canned or bottled. It was just when Mr. Harrison packaged this product that people became aware of its commercialization. To promote the product, many advertisement programs in radio, television and newspapers were made and had contributed to the fame of Coke. Famous personalities like Bill Gates had been a part of the continuing recognition of the said product. And since its production begun a century ago, there are jingles of Coke that are still remembered now like â€Å"When the Holidays Come Along†(with the lyrics, ‘whenever there’s a coke there’s always a fun†¦), â€Å"The Bee Gees Coke Commercial†, â€Å"Have a Coke and Smile†(produced on 1981) and a very recent commercial aired last year, â€Å"The Coca-Cola Happiness Factory†. Mr. J. Frank Harrison III, a descendant of Mr. Harrison way back in 1902,  is currently the Chief Executive Officer, Chairman of Executive Committee and Chairman of Finance Committee of CCBCC. Also, Mr. Steven D. Westphal acts as the Chief Finance Officer and joins the executive committee of the company. Moreover, Coca Cola Enterprises Incorporated shares in owning CCBCC and is said to have 1000 shares as of August 2007. Under the Beverage – Soft Drinks Industry, CCBCC is the top grosser on stocks among Pepsi Company Inc., Cadbury Schweppes Americas Beverages, Groupe Danone World Water Division, and other companies providing the same product as of the present. As of August 31, 2007, CCBCC sells Coke at an average of $58.67. From the recent quarterly reports of the company, it is stated that it has a net income of $11.7 million as of July 1 2007. This is higher than the calculated quarterly net income of April 2007 which was $4.7 million, more than a hundred percent increase on net income. The repots for the stockholders also said that there is a one percent increase on the net sales of the product that was from the decrease in the selling price of bottles/cans. Also, the charts and graphs presented for the evaluation of the sales and production of Coke on July 2007 stated that it has increased its selling price compared to the past months. Since there are still products emerging from this company and their bottling capacities are of good quality (as they claim it), I think that in the future Coca-Cola Bottling Company Consolidated will still be a big influence in the Food Industry, especially in the beverage – soft drinks sections.  By looking on the reports passed to the stockholders (which I think Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc. owns), it will have a progress for the years ahead bearing the quarterly increases on the incomes and the people who patronizes coke. Constant observation and evaluation of the company’s performance, the improvements and modifications for the product can be done for a more successful path in the economy. Indeed this product will still be a boom for the next generations. Homelessness is a problem virtually every society suffers from. There are many things that cause people to become homeless, such as unemployment, relationship problems, and being evicted from ones domicile either by a landlord, friend or even a family member. However, with every cause there must be an effect. Some of the effects of one becoming homeless, besides the obvious change of lifestyle, are various health problems which often times may lead to death. Many people find themselves in a predicament when they are living with a partner and the two decide to go their separate ways. Other than the obvious change in the person’s life style, such as the type and quality of clothing they wear or their mode of transportation, homeless people are subject to various health effects as well. In recent studies it has been found that one out of every three homeless people suffers from some sort of mental illness. The mental illness may have been the reason the person became homeless or they may have acquired the illness from living on the streets. When a person loses everything they have worked for it may affect them mentally. Another common effect that homeless people suffer from is Nutritional deficiency, better know as malnutrition. A homeless person’s diet is considerably different than that of someone who is not homeless. Since they cannot afford to eat out or make a home cooked meal, they often have to dig in trash cans to find left over food from restaurants or other people. A lot of the food they eat is spoiled or rotten and is not healthy for them, but rotten food is better than no food. In addition homeless people are also subject to abuse, both physically and sexually. It is estimated that ho meless females are twenty times more likely to be sexually assaulted than a female who is not homeless, and many of these crimes will go unreported as well.
